The latest National Statistics on Commuting in Wales produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 18 December 2008 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority WebsiteThese statistics, for Wales and the Welsh local authorities, relate to the calendar year 2007.  The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 5 December 2007.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • There was a net outflow of 21,600 working people from Wales (down from 29,500 in 2006). This comprised 81,100 Welsh residents working outside Wales offset by 59,500 people resident outside Wales coming into Wales to work.
  • 94% of all working Welsh residents worked in Wales and a large majority worked within the local authority in which they lived (71% of all working residents).
  • At local authority level, Cardiff has the largest net inflow at 48,600, (24.8% of all people working in Cardiff).  The largest net outflows were for Caerphilly (16,200 or 22.5% of all working residents), Neath Port Talbot (13,400 or 24.5% of all working residents) and the Vale of Glamorgan (14,300 or 25.0% of all working residents).
  • The number of persons commuting out of Wales increased steadily between 2001 and 2004 from around 72,000 to 82,000. Since then it has fluctuated, falling back to 73,000 in 2005, before climbing to 86,000 in 2006 and dropping to 81,000 in 2007.
  • After a reduction between 2001 and 2002, the number of persons commuting into Wales has increased fairly steadily, from around 34,000 in 2002 to 59,000 in 2007.

The analyses are based on the Labour Force Survey and the Annual Population Survey.
