The Office for National Statistics (ONS) recently released household datasets from Annual Population Survey for the first time. These datasets cover the years 2004 to 2007 and enable analyses to be carried out at a Local Authority level.

UK Statistics Authority website This bulletin looks at the percentage of workless households, children in workless households, lone parents and housing tenure.

The main results from the statistics show that:

  • In 2007, 18.5 per cent of all working age households in Wales were workless.  This compares with 15.6 per cent of all working age households in the United Kingdom.  However, between 2001 and 2007 the gap between Wales and the rest of the UK has more than halved.
  • Merthyr Tydfil and Neath Port Talbot had the highest percentages of working age households that were workless, with 26.2 per cent and 24.7 per cent respectively.   Monmouthshire and Flintshire had the lowest percentages, with 12.4 per cent and 13.8 per cent respectively.
  • In Wales, the percentage of children in workless households fell from 2004 to 2006, but this rose again in 2007 to 18.3 per cent.
  • Torfaen (25.8 per cent) and Newport (24.1 per cent) had the highest percentages of children in workless households in 2007.   Monmouthshire (9.6 per cent) and Flintshire (11.7 per cent) had the lowest percentages of children in workless households in 2007.
  • The overall percentage of lone parent families is higher in Wales than in the UK, 9.6 per cent in Wales compared to 8.6 per cent in the UK.  The highest percentage of lone parent families was found in Merthyr Tydfil and the lowest percentage was in Monmouthshire.
  • The more rural local authorities had the highest percentage of households that were owned outright, with the highest proportions being in Pembrokeshire, Ceredigion and Powys.  Torfaen and Blaenau Gwent had the highest proportions that were renting, most of which were rented from the local authority or housing association.
