Research and Development Expenditure (Updated for Business Enterprise Expenditure in 2007)

The latest National Statistics on Business Enterprise Research and Development (BERD) expenditure for the UK, including estimates by English region and UK country, were released on at 9:30am on 30 January 2009 by the Office for National Statistics (ONS), according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority website In 2007, BERD expenditure for Wales was £227 million, up 2 per cent in real terms on the figure for 2006. This represented 1.4 per cent of the UK total.

  • Between 2006 and 2007, BERD expenditure in the UK increased by 7% in real terms to £16.1 billion.
  • BERD expenditure increased in real terms in all but one of the twelve devolved countries and English regions between 2006 and 2007, with the largest percentage increase in the North West (up 29 per cent). The only reduction was in the South West (down 1 per cent).
  • The level of BERD expenditure in Wales can be influenced greatly by individual projects commencing or ending in a small number of individual companies. The BERD expenditure series for Wales is therefore quite volatile and so a longer-term perspective is of interest. Between 1993 and 2007, BERD expenditure in Wales increased by 44 per cent in real terms (or by an average of 3 per cent per year).
