Public Service Productivity - Public Service Output, Input And Productivity: Education, 2009

The latest National Statistics on Education Productivity produced by the Office for National Statistics were released on 1 December 2009 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on inputs, outputs include data for England, Scotland and Wales for the period 1996 to 2008. Statistics on productivity for the UK cover the period 1996 to 2008. The latest release updates the statistics previously released in September 2007.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • The Article suggests that for the UK as a whole between 1996 and 2008 education output increased by 33.4 per cent, giving an annual average growth of 2.4 per cent, Wales grew 21.5 per cent giving an annual average growth of 1.6 per cent.
  • Over the same period the volume of inputs increased by 33.3 per cent, or 2.4 per cent per year, publicly funded education (quantity) increased by 4.6 per cent.  In Wales the equivalent growth rate is 0.9 per cent.
  • Thus, productivity, which is a ratio of outputs to inputs, has remained flat over the whole period.  As outputs grew faster than inputs during the period 1996 to 2000 productivity increased in those years, but as inputs grew more latterly, then productivity started to fall steadily.
