UK Statistics Authority Website

The Welsh Index of Market Services show the short-term movements in the output of service sector companies within Wales, including new data for the three months to September 2009 relating to quarter 3. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 12 November 2009.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • The longer term trend for the Welsh Index of Market Services shows a fall of just over 2 per cent when comparing the latest four quarters with the previous four quarters. The UK figures show a contraction of more than double this. The short term quarterly movements in Wales show a rise of 1.5 per cent whereas the UK remained unchanged over the last quarter.
  • The fall over the longer term in Wales is largely accounted for by a reduction in output of Business Services in Wales. Over the shorter term, the increases in Wales are mainly due to Other Services and Finance.

The quarterly estimates can be volatile and should be interpreted in the context of changes over several quarters rather than in isolation.

The Retail component within the Index of Distribution for quarter 2 2009 has had a large revision in quarter 3 2009. This was due to an error in the last publication that came from data provided by the Office for National Statistics.
