The latest National Statistics on Welsh Index of Market Services produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 11 May 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website The Welsh Index of Market Services show the short-term movements in the output of service sector companies within Wales, including new data for the three months to December 2009 relating to quarter 4. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 9 February 2010.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • The longer term trend for the Welsh Index of Market Services shows a fall of 1.9 per cent when comparing the latest four quarters with the previous four quarters. The UK figures show a fall of 5.1 per cent over the same period. The short term quarterly movement in Wales shows no change this quarter whereas the UK output has increased by 0.9 per cent.
  • The fall over the longer term is largely accounted for by a reduction in output of Business Services and Hotels and Restaurants. Over the shorter term increases in Distribution and Other Services have been offset by falls in Transport and Business Services.

The quarterly estimates can be volatile and should be interpreted in the context of changes over several quarters rather than in isolation.

Please note that there have been additional revisions to the Index of Business Services series and next quarter the Index of Market Services will be re-based to 2006=100. More information can be found in the notes.
