The latest Annual Population Survey results produced by the Office for National Statistics were released on 24 June 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website The latest Annual Population Survey (APS) results cover the calendar year 2009.  The APS combines the boosted samples of the Labour Force Survey and provides rolling four-quarter labour market data for UK countries and regions and also for local areas.  For Wales, the APS consists of a sample of about 20,000 households every year.  The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 25 March 2010.

The key labour market results from the latest release are:

  • The working age employment rate in West Wales and the Valleys was 66.8 per cent, whilst that for East Wales was 71.7 per cent (Wales: 68.6 per cent, UK:  72.4 per cent).
  • In West Wales and the Valleys, the employment rate was down 0.3 percentage points on 2001.  In East Wales it was down 0.9 percentage points. (Wales down 0.5 percentage points and UK down 1.7 percentage points).
