The latest National Statistics on the labour market produced by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) were released on 13 October 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

The key points from the latest ONS release are:

The Labour Force Survey estimates for the 3 months to August 2010 show:

  • The employment rate for those aged from 16 - 64 in Wales was 67.2 per cent, up from 66.8 per cent in the same period a year earlier.  The UK average was 70.7 per cent.
  • The unemployment rate in Wales was 8.2 per cent of the economically active, down from 9.1 per cent in the same period a year earlier.  For the UK as a whole it was 7.7 per cent.
  • The rate of economic inactivity for those aged from 16 - 64 in Wales was 26.6 per cent, up from 26.4 percent in the same period a year earlier.  The UK average was 23.2 per cent.

The claimant count rate in September 2010 for Wales was 5.1 per cent of the workforce, down 0.6 percentage points on September 2009 (UK rate 4.5 per cent, down 0.4 percentage points).

The key economic statistics bulletin which will be published on Friday will include new:  Sub-Regional labour market data for the year to 31 March 2010; and Indices of Production and Construction data for Q2 2010.
