The latest National Statistics on business enterprise research and development (BERD) produced by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) were released on the 1 December 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics on business enterprise research and development include estimate by English region and UK country for 2009. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 11 December 2009.

  • In 2009, BERD expenditure for Wales was £321 million, up 1 per cent in real terms on the figure for 2008.  This represented 2.1 per cent of the UK total.
  • Between 2008 and 2009, BERD expenditure in the UK fell by 4 per cent in real terms to £15.6 billion.
  • BERD expenditure increased in real terms in five of the twelve devolved countries and English regions between 2008 and 2009, with the largest percentage increase in Northern Ireland (up 71 per cent). The largest reduction was in London (down 17 per cent).
  • The level of BERD expenditure in Wales can be influenced greatly by individual projects commencing or ending in a small number of individual companies.  The BERD expenditure series for Wales is therefore quite volatile and so a longer-term perspective is of interest.  Between 1993 and 2009, BERD expenditure in Wales increased by 94 per cent in real terms (or by an average of 4 per cent per year).
