The latest National Statistics on Welsh Index of Market Services produced by the Welsh Government were released on 9 August 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website The Welsh Index of Market Services show the short-term movements in the output of service sector companies within Wales, including new data for the three months to March, relating to 2011 quarter 1. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 10 May 2011.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • The longer term trend for the Welsh Index of Market Services shows a rise of 1.6 per cent when comparing the latest four quarters with the previous four quarters. The UK output rose by 1.4 per cent over the same period.  The rise in Wales over the longer term is largely accounted for by increases in the output of business services, distribution, hotels & restaurants and finance.  The increase in the UK was due to increases in business services and distribution.
  • Over the shorter term (latest quarter compared to previous quarter) output in Wales rose by 2.0 per cent and output in the UK rose by 1.0 per cent.  The rise in Wales was largely due to increases in business services.  The rise in the UK was due to increases in transport and communication and business services.

The dataset on StatsWales will be updated to include these new data by 12 noon on 10 August 2011.
