Annual Population Survey, Year to 31 March 2011

The latest Annual Population Survey results produced by the Office for National Statistics were released on 22 September 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website The latest Annual Population Survey (APS) results cover the year ended 31 March 2011.  The APS combines the boosted samples of the Labour Force Survey and provides rolling four-quarter labour market data for UK countries and regions and also for local areas.  For Wales, the APS consists of a sample of about 16,000 households every year.  The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 23 June 2011.

The key labour market results from the latest release are:

  • The employment rate for 16-64 year olds in West Wales and the Valleys was 65.0 per cent, whilst that for East Wales was 68.3 per cent (Wales: 66.3 per cent, UK:  70.2 per cent).
  • In West Wales and the Valleys, the employment rate was unchanged on 2001.  In East Wales it was down 2.5 percentage points. (Wales down 0.9 percentage points and UK down 2.1 percentage points).
