Index of Production and Construction, Quarter 2 2011

The Index of Production and the Index of Construction for Wales show the short term movements in the output of industries in the production and construction sectors within Wales including new data for the three months to June relating to the second quarter of 2011.

Statistics on the Index of Production and the Index of Construction include data for Wales and the UK for the period up to Quarter 2 2011. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 28 June 2011. These indices have also been moved to a Standard Industrial Classification 2007 basis – more information is given in the release.

The key messages from the release are:

• The longer term trend for the Index of Production for Wales shows a fall of 0.7 per cent when comparing the latest four quarters to the previous four quarters.  UK output rose by 1.7 per cent. The short term quarterly movements show falls of 1.7 per cent for Wales and 1.2 per cent for the UK.
• The longer term trend for the Index of Construction for Wales shows a rise of 6.5 per cent when comparing the latest four quarters to the previous four quarters. UK output rose by 7.3 per cent over the same period.  The short term quarterly movements in the construction industry show a similar rise for both Wales and the UK (up 1.0 per cent and 1.1 per cent respectively).
