Welsh Index of Market Services, Quarter 2 2011

The Index of Market Services for Wales show the short-term movements in the output of service sector companies within Wales, including new data for the three months to June, relating to the second quarter of 2011.

Statistics on the Index of Market Services include data for Wales and the UK for the period up to 2011 Quarter 2. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 9 August 2011. These indices have also been moved to a Standard Industrial Classification 2007 basis – more information is given in the release.

The key points from the latest release are:

• The longer term trend for the Index of Market Services for Wales shows a rise of 2.3 per cent when comparing the latest four quarters to the previous four quarters. UK output rose by 1.2 per cent. The increase in Wales over the longer term is accounted for by increases in output from Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities and Administrative and Support Services Activities. The increase in the UK was largely due to Information and Communication Activities and Administrative and Support Services Activities.
• Over the shorter term (latest quarter compared to previous quarter) output in Wales rose by 1.5 per cent and output in the UK rose by 0.2 per cent. The increase in Wales is driven by the output of Accommodation and Food Services Activities and Distribution, along with four other sectors. The increase in the UK index is largely accounted for by Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities.

The dataset on StatsWales will be updated to include these new data by 12 noon on 25 November 2011.
