The latest National Statistics on business demography produced by the Office for National Statistics were released on 6 December 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics on enterprise births, deaths and survival rates include data for Wales and local authorities within Wales for 2010. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 1 December 2010.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • There were 7,505 enterprise births in Wales during 2010, which is a rate(1) of 8.5 per cent. This is the second lowest rate out of the UK countries and regions (ahead of Northern Ireland). The UK birth rate was 10.2 per cent.
  • There were 10,985 enterprise deaths in Wales during 2010, which is a rate(1) of 12.5 per cent. This is the fifth lowest rate of the UK countries and regions (with London the highest at 15.0 per cent). The UK death rate was 12.9 per cent.
  • The total number of enterprises active in Wales during 2010 was 88,170. This includes only those enterprises which are headquartered in Wales.
  • The 5 year survival rate for enterprises born in 2005 and still active in 2010 for Wales was 44 per cent, the same as the UK survival rate. The highest 5 year survival rate was in Northern Ireland (54 per cent), whilst the lowest was in London (40 per cent).
  • The 1 year survival rate for enterprises born in 2009 and still active in 2010 for Wales was 92 per cent, slightly above the UK survival rate of 91 per cent. The lowest survival rate was in Northern Ireland (85 per cent) whilst the highest was in the South West (93 per cent).
