The latest National Statistics on Average Hours Worked produced by the Welsh Government were released on 8 December 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics on Average hours worked include data for Wales for 2010. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 5 November 2009.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • Usual hours of work have increased 0.2 hours since 2009 but decreased by 0.5 hours since 2000 compared to a decrease of 0.3 hours since 2000 for the UK. However, both the UK and Wales average remain above the EU27 average;
  • The self – employed continue to have the longest average hours of work at 40.5 hours per week compared to 34.1 hours per week for employees, but the gap between the self – employed and employees has narrowed from 9.6 hours in 2001 to 6.4 hours in 2010;
  • The proportion of people working non – standard working time arrangements has increased since 2002 - 04 by 2.4 percentage points to 24.1 per cent of employed persons.

The analyses are based on the Labour Force Survey and the Annual Population Survey.
