The latest National Statistics on Commuting in Wales produced by the Welsh Government were released on 22 December 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website These statistics, for Wales and the Welsh local authorities, relate to the calendar year 2010.  The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 21 December 2010.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • There was a net outflow of 32,400 working people from Wales (up from 31,500 in 2009). This comprised 81,300 Welsh residents working outside Wales, offset by 48,800 people resident outside Wales coming into Wales to work.
  • 94 per cent of all working Welsh residents worked in Wales and a large majority worked within the local authority in which they lived (71 per cent of all working residents).
  • At local authority level, Cardiff has the largest net inflow at 45,500 (37 per cent of all people working in Cardiff commuted in from elsewhere).  The largest net outflows were from the Rhondda Cynon Taf, Caerphilly and The Vale of Glamorgan.
  • The average commute time in Wales was 22 minutes, with the longest in Rhondda Cynon Taf at 26 minutes and the shortest in Gwynedd, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire at 18 minutes.

The analyses are based on the Labour Force Survey and the Annual Population Survey.
