The latest bulletin on workplace employment by industry in Wales produced by the Welsh Government was released on 26 July 2012 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority website This bulletin is based on statistics from three different sources that are already in the public domain, and provides estimates of workplace employment (or total jobs) in Wales.

The analyses presented cover the aggregate of employees, the self employed and government supported trainees at a broad industrial level in Wales, with estimates also presented at sub-Wales levels.  By also including detail over time, the bulletin increases the information publicly available on jobs in Wales.

The key results are as follows:

  • The distribution of workplace employment in Wales in 2010 was broadly similar to that in the UK for most industry sectors.  There was a higher proportion of employment in Wales in public administration, defence, education, and health (which is not the same as the public sector) and a lower proportion in finance and business activities.
  • Between 2009 and 2010 workplace employment in Wales fell by 1 per cent. This was driven by a fall in the manufacturing sector (down 6 per cent). The UK as a whole remained unchanged over this period in percentage terms. This was balanced by a fall in the construction sector (down 6 per cent) and an increase in the administration and support service activities and human health and social work activities sectors (up 3 per cent and 2 per cent respectively).
  • In 2010 there was substantial variation in the distribution of workplace employment between industries at the local authority level in Wales with the largest difference being in production where the percentage in employment varied from 3 per cent in Conwy to 28 per cent in Flintshire.
  • Workplace employment in Wales increased by 2 per cent between 2001 and 2011, above the increase across the UK as a whole (up 1 per cent).
