Index of Production and Construction for Wales, Quarter 2 2012

The Index of Production and the Index of Construction for Wales show the short term movements in the output of industries in the production and construction sectors within Wales including new data for the three months to June relating to the second quarter of 2012.

Statistics on the Index of Production and the Index of Construction include data for Wales and the UK for the period up to Quarter 2 2012. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 24 July 2012.

The key messages from the release are:

• The longer term trend for the Index of Production for Wales shows a fall of 1.5 per cent when comparing the latest four quarters to the previous four quarters. UK output also fell, down 2.4 per cent. The short term quarterly movements rose in Wales (up 3.0 per cent) whilst the UK output fell (down 0.4 per cent). The fall over the longer term in Wales was largely accounted for by falls in computer and electronic products and other manufacturing. In the UK the fall was largely accounted for by chemicals and pharmaceuticals.
• The longer term trend for the Index of Construction for Wales shows a fall of 8.4 per cent when comparing the latest four quarters to the previous four quarters. UK output fell by 3.1 per cent.  The short term quarterly movements in the construction industry show Wales rose by 1.0 per cent whilst the UK fell by 4.4 per cent.

Revision note

Due to an error in the UK data provided to us by the Office for National Statistics the release has been revised to include the corrected UK information. This has impacted on the Index of Construction for the UK back to 1998; more details are included in the notes section of the release. Data were revised on 1 November 2012.
