Welsh Index of Market Services, Quarter 2 2012

The Index of Market Services for Wales show the short-term movements in the output of service sector companies within Wales, including new data for the three months to June, relating to the second quarter of 2012.

Statistics on the Index of Market Services include data for Wales and the UK for the period up to 2012 Quarter 2. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 24 July 2012.

The key points from the latest release are:

• The longer term trend for the Index of Market Services for Wales shows a rise of 4.9 per cent when comparing the latest four quarters to the previous four quarters. UK output rose by 1.3 per cent. The increase in Wales over the longer term is largely accounted for by increases in output from Distribution and Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities. The increase in the UK is largely accounted for by increases in output from the Professional, Scientific and Technical Activities and Administrative & Support Service Activities.
• Over the shorter term (latest quarter compared to previous quarter) output in Wales rose by 1.0 per cent and output in the UK fell by 0.1 per cent.  The increase in Wales is largely accounted for by the increases in output of Real Estate Activities and Other Service Activities whereas the decrease in the UK is largely accounted for by decreases in the output of Information & Communication Activities and Transport.

Revision note

Due to an error in the UK data provided to us by the Office for National Statistics the release has been revised to include the corrected UK information. This has impacted on both the Index of Distribution for the UK and Index of Transport for the UK back to the first quarter of 2011; as a result the Index of Market Services for the UK back to first quarter of 2011 has also been revised. More details are included in the notes section of the release. Data were revised on 1 November 2012.
