Commuting in Wales, 2011

These statistics, for Wales and the Welsh local authorities, relate to the calendar year 2011. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 22 December 2011.

The key points from the latest release are:

• there was a net outflow of 28,000 working people from Wales (down from 32,000 in 2010). This comprised 81,700 Welsh residents working outside Wales, offset by 53,700 people resident outside Wales coming into Wales to work
• 94 per cent of all working Welsh residents worked in Wales and a large majority worked within the local authority in which they lived (70 per cent of all working residents)
• at local authority level, Cardiff has the largest net inflow at 50,000 (37 per cent of all people working in Cardiff commuted in from elsewhere). The largest net outflows were from the Rhondda Cynon Taf, Caerphilly and Flintshire
• the average commute time in Wales was 22 minutes, with the longest in Rhondda Cynon Taf at 26 minutes and the shortest in Gwynedd, Ceredigion and Pembrokeshire at 18 minutes
• the analyses are based on the Labour Force Survey and the Annual Population Survey
