The latest Annual Population Survey results produced by the Office for National Statistics were released on 21 March 2013 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority website The Office for National Statistics have brought forward the Annual Population Survey (APS) data processing by three months, which means the APS release is now only one month after the headline Labour Force Survey figures.

The latest APS results cover the calendar year 2012.  The APS combines the boosted samples of the Labour Force Survey and provides rolling four-quarter labour market data for UK countries and regions and also for local areas.  For Wales, the APS consists of a sample of about 20,000 households every year.  The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 19 December 2012.

The key labour market results for the calendar year 2012 are:

  • the employment rate for the population aged 16 to 64 in West Wales and the Valleys was 66.2 per cent, whilst that for East Wales was 69.1 per cent (Wales: 67.3 per cent, UK: 70.6 per cent)
  • in West Wales and the Valleys, the employment rate was up 1.2 percentage points on 2001, but in East Wales the rate was down 1.7 percentage points on 2001 (Wales up 0.2 percentage points and UK down 1.6 percentage points)

The detailed APS datasets on StatsWales will be updated to include these new data over the next few days.
