The latest National Statistics on the Index of Production and the Index of Construction produced by the Welsh Government were released on 17 January 2013 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority website The Index of Production and the Index of Construction for Wales show the short term movements in the output of industries in the production and construction sectors within Wales including new data for the three months to September relating to the third quarter of 2012.

Statistics on the Index of Production and the Index of Construction include data for Wales and the UK for the period up to quarter 3 2012. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 9 October 2012.

The key messages from the release are:

  • the longer term trend for the Index of Production for Wales shows a fall of 0.4 per cent when comparing the latest four quarters to the previous four quarters. UK output also fell, down 2.5 per cent. The short term quarterly movements rose in both Wales and the UK (up 2.2 per cent and 0.7 per cent respectively). The fall over the longer term in Wales was largely accounted for by falls in computer and electronic products and transport equipment. In the UK the fall was largely accounted for by chemicals and pharmaceuticals and other manufacturing
  • the longer term trend for the Index of Construction for Wales shows a fall of 10.9 per cent when comparing the latest four quarters to the previous four quarters. UK output fell by 6.0 per cent. The short term quarterly movements in the construction industry show output in Wales rose by 9.0 per cent whilst the UK fell by 2.6 per cent
