The latest National Statistics on municipal waste produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 1 April 2009 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website The Bulletin provides information on the amount of municipal waste collected from household and non-household sources and the levels of recycling in Wales. The information presented relates to 2006-07, together with figures for previous years.

The key points from the Bulletin are:

  • The total amount of municipal waste arising in 2006-07, excluding abandoned vehicles, was 1.83 million tonnes, down from 1.90 million tonnes in 2005-06.
  • The percentage of municipal waste being recycled or composted increased from 26 per cent in 2005-06 to 30 per cent in 2006-07.  Of which, 21 per cent was recycled and 9 per cent was composted.
  • During 2006-07 there was 1.57 million tonnes of household waste, accounting for 86 per cent of all municipal waste.
