The latest statistics on fly-tipping produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 1 October 2009 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

This release gives a summary of fly-tipping incidents in Wales, as recorded by local authorities, over the last three years.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • The number of recorded fly-tipping incidents in Wales has fallen since 2007-08 to a similar level as 2006-07, with 55,300 incidents occurring in 2008-09.
  • The estimated cost of clearance of illegally dumped waste reported by local authorities in 2008-09 was £2.94 million, compared with costs of £3.07 million in 2007-08 and £2.95 million in 2006-07.
  • Fly-tipping incidents mainly occur in urban local authorities, by the highway, and mostly involve household waste.
