The latest National Statistics on municipal waste produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 1 December 2009 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website The bulletin includes information about the amount of municipal waste collected from household and non-household sources and the levels of recycling in Wales. The information presented relates to 2008-09, together with figures for previous years.

The key points from the latest bulletin are:

  • The total amount of municipal waste (excluding abandoned vehicles) produced in Wales has continued to fall over the last 4 years, with just over 1.7 million tonnes produced in 2008-09.
  • The percentage of municipal waste (excluding abandoned vehicles) reused, recycled or composted in Wales has been continually increasing since 2000-01. Furthermore the 2008-09 rate of 37 per cent is more than five times higher than the 2000-01 rate of 7 per cent.
  • Whilst landfill is still the main form of management of municipal waste, the use of landfill sites has been steadily decreasing over the last 7 years.
