Municipal Waste Management Report, 2008-09 - Revised

The bulletin includes information about the amount of municipal waste collected from household and non-household sources and the levels of recycling in Wales. The information presented relates to 2008-09, together with figures for previous years.

The key points from the latest bulletin are:

• The total amount of municipal waste (excluding abandoned vehicles) produced in Wales has continued to fall over the last 4 years, with just over 1.7 million tonnes produced in 2008-09.
• The percentage of municipal waste (excluding abandoned vehicles) reused, recycled or composted in Wales has been continually increasing since 2000-01. Furthermore the 2008-09 rate of 37 per cent is more than five times higher than the 2000-01 rate of 7 per cent.
• Whilst landfill is still the main form of management of municipal waste, the use of landfill sites has been steadily decreasing over the last 7 years.
