The latest quarterly statistics on municipal waste produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 12 January 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

This release covers provisional quarterly results from the WasteDataFlow system for July-September 2010 (Quarter 2, 2010-11).

The key points from the latest release are:

  • There has been an upward trend in the percentage of municipal waste recycled, reused and composted in Wales, rising from 41 per cent in July to September 2009 to 45 per cent in July to September 2010.
  • The total amount of municipal waste produced in Wales has decreased overall, falling from 432 thousand tonnes in July to September 2009 to 409 thousand tonnes in July to September 2010.
  • The residual household waste produced per person in Wales has continued to decrease, falling from 77 kilograms per person in July to September 2009 to 68 kilograms per person in July to September 2010.

Revision note

Figures in tables 6 have been revised due to an error in the calculation of the percentage point change column. Data were revised on 11 May 2011.
