The latest quarterly statistics on municipal waste produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 29 March 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

This release covers provisional quarterly results from the WasteDataFlow system for October-December 2010 (Quarter 3, 2010-11).

The key points from the latest release are:

  • There has been an upward trend in the percentage of municipal waste recycled, reused and composted in Wales, rising from 37 per cent in October to December 2009 to 42 per cent in October to December 2010.
  • The total amount of municipal waste produced in Wales overall has decreased, falling from 373 thousand tonnes in October to December 2009 to 340 thousand tonnes in October to December 2010. This though may be due in part to the adverse weather conditions experienced in Wales in December 2010.
  • The residual household waste produced per person in Wales has continued to decrease, falling from 71 kilograms per person in October to December 2009 to 60 kilograms per person in October to December 2010.
