The latest quarterly statistics on municipal waste produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 28 June 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

This release covers provisional quarterly results from the WasteDataFlow system for January-March 2011 (Quarter 4, 2010-11).

The key points from the latest release are:

  • There has been an increase in the percentage of municipal waste recycled, reused and composted in Wales, from 37 per cent in January to March 2010 to 43 per cent in January to March 2011. The provisional overall reuse/recycling/composting rate for 2010-11 was 44 per cent.
  • The total amount of municipal waste produced in Wales overall increased, from 367 thousand tonnes in January to March 2010 to 378 thousand tonnes in January to March 2011.  This may be due in part to the adverse weather conditions experienced in Wales in December 2010 which had a knock-on impact on waste amounts collected in January 2011.
  • The residual household waste produced per person in Wales has continued to decrease, falling from 71 kilograms per person in January to March 2010 to 65 kilograms per person in January to March 2011.
