The latest quarterly statistics on local authority municipal waste produced by the Welsh Government were released on 12 April 2012 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

This release covers provisional quarterly results from the Environment Agency’s WasteDataFlow system for October – December 2011 (Quarter 3, 2011-12).

The key points from the latest release are:

  • The combined reuse/recycling/composting rate of local authority municipal waste continued to increase to 47 per cent for the 12 months to the end of December 2011, based on provisional data, compared to 42 per cent for the 12 months to the end of December 2010.
  • The percentage of local authority municipal waste prepared for reuse, recycled or composted in Wales continued to increase on a quarterly basis reaching a peak of 49 per cent in October to December 2011.
  • The total amount of local authority municipal waste generated in Wales has generally decreased, however the 346 thousand tonnes generated in October - December 2011 was 2 per cent higher than for the same quarter in 2010.
  • The residual household waste produced per person in Wales has also continued to decrease, falling to 54 kilograms per person in October to December 2011, from 59 kilograms per person in October to December 2010.
