The latest quarterly statistics on local authority municipal waste produced by the Welsh Government were released on 28 June 2012 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

This release covers provisional quarterly results from the Environment Agency’s WasteDataFlow system for January – March 2012 (Quarter 4, 2011-12).

The key points from the latest release are:

  • The combined reuse/recycling/composting rate of local authority municipal waste continued to increase to 48 per cent for the 12 months to the end of March 2012, based on provisional data, compared to 44 per cent for the 12 months to the end of March 2011.
  • The percentage of local authority municipal waste prepared for reuse, recycled or composted in Wales continued to increase for the January to March quarter, reaching a peak of 48 per cent in January to March 2012.
  • The total amount of local authority municipal waste generated in Wales has generally decreased, with the tonnage 7 per cent lower than for the same quarter in 2011.
  • The residual household waste produced per person in Wales also continued to decrease, falling to 56 kilograms per person in January to March 2012, from 65 kilograms per person in January to March 2011.
