The latest annual National Statistics bulletin on municipal waste produced by the Welsh Government was published on 08 November 2012 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority website The bulletin includes information about the amount of local authority municipal waste collected from household and non-household sources and the levels of recycling in Wales. The information presented relates to 2011-12, together with figures for previous years.

The key points from the latest bulletin are:

  • The total amount of local authority municipal waste, excluding abandoned vehicles, generated in Wales has continued to fall since its peak in 2004-05, with 1.57 million tonnes produced in 2011-12.
  • The amount of waste disposed of in landfill continued to fall with 0.7 million tonnes sent to landfill in 2011-12, accounting for 46 per cent of all waste. For the first time the amount sent to landfill is now less than the amount of waste sent for reuse, recycling or composting (0.8 million tonnes).
  • The percentage of local authority municipal waste (excluding abandoned vehicles) that was reused, recycled or composted in Wales has seen a continued increase since 2000-01 to reach 50 per cent in 2011-12. In comparison the National Strategic Indicator rate for 2011-12 remained slightly lower at 48.5 per cent.
  • The reuse/recycling/composting rate for household waste also continues to increase and remains less than 1 percentage point lower than the local authority municipal waste reuse/recycling/composting rate.
  • In 2011-12, the local authority with the highest reuse/recycling/composting rate was Caerphilly (59.1 per cent), whilst Blaenau Gwent had the lowest rate (42.3 per cent).
