The latest statistics on Operational issues affecting the Fire and Rescue Service produced by the Welsh Government were released on 13 October 2011 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on Operational issues affecting the Fire and Rescue Service include data for Wales for the financial year 2010-11. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 30 November 2010.

The key points from the latest release are:

Fire and Rescue Service personnel

  • There were 2,267 fulltime equivalent staff and 1,602 retained duty system staff employed across the three Welsh Fire and Rescue Service Authority areas on 31 March 2011 compared to 2,337 fulltime and 1,598 retained staff on 31 March 2010.
  • There were 1,510 job applications received for retained duty system and non-operational posts in Wales in 2010-11.

Equality and diversity

  • At 31 March 2011, males accounted for 86 per cent of all staff, and for 96 per cent of wholetime and 97 per cent of retained duty system staff.
  • Minority ethnic staff in Wales accounted for around 1 per cent of all staff, a similar proportion as the previous year.
  • During 2010-11 women accounted for 18 per cent of all successful job applications whilst people from ethnic minority backgrounds accounted for around 1 per cent.

Health and safety

  • During 2010-11, 6.2 shifts/days were lost per person to sickness for wholetime firefighters and 9.2 shifts/days for fire control staff.
  • The total number of injuries sustained by wholetime and retained duty system firefighters decreased by 26 per cent to 174 in 2010-11 compared to the previous year.

Operational activities

  • During 2010-11 there were 8,977 non-fire incidents in Wales, a decrease of 12 per cent on 2009-10.

Fire Safety

  • In 2010-11, Welsh Fire and Rescue Services completed over 5,600 fire safety audits. This represents 10 per cent of known non-domestic premises in Wales.
