The latest National Statistics on Fire statistics produced by the Welsh Government were released on 31 July according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority website Statistics on fire incidents include data for Wales for the period up to the end of March 2012. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 28 July 2011.

The Welsh Government compiles these statistics from reports on all fires attended submitted by all Fire and Rescue Services in Wales to the Department for Communities and Local Government (CLG).

The bulletin covers the period 2001-02 to 2011-12 and provides the latest annual in-depth analysis of fire incidents attended by Welsh Fire and Rescue Services. Analysis includes details on location, cause, motive, casualties and false alarms attended.

Fires:

  • The number of attendances at fire incidents by Welsh Fire and Rescue Services has seen a downward trend since 2001-02, falling by 41 per cent. In 2011-12 this trend continued with a decrease of 14 per cent on the 2010-11 figure.
  • The number of primary fires in Wales decreased by 12 per cent over the year from 6,414 in 2010-11 to 5,653 in 2011-12. Primary fires include all fires in non-derelict buildings and vehicles or in outdoor structures, or any fire involving casualties, rescues, or fires attended by five or more appliances.

Casualties:

  • There were 19 fatal casualties from fires in Wales in 2011-12.
  • The number of non-fatal casualties was 581 in 2011-12 a decrease of 4 percent compared with 2010 11.

False Alarms:

  • In 2011-12 there were 15,870 false fire alarms in Wales, down from 17,006 in 2010-11, a fall of 7 per cent.
  • The number of malicious false fire alarms increased slightly from 769 in 2010-11 to 775 in 2011 12.

Smoke Alarms:

  • In a third (664) of the 2,004 fires in dwellings in Wales in 2011-12, no smoke alarm was installed.
