The latest statistics on fire and rescue service performance produced by the Welsh Government were released on 16 October 2012 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on fire and rescue service performance include data for Wales for the period 2011-12. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 13 October 2011.

Key results for 2011-12 show:

  • There were 16,447 fires attended by the Fire and Rescue Services in Wales, a decrease of 20 per cent compared with 2010-11;
  • There were 10,643 deliberate fires started in Wales, a decrease of 25 per cent compared to 2010-11 and 46 per cent less than in 2004-05;
  • There were 23 deaths due to fires in Wales; 2 more than in 2010-11, close to the annual average since 2004-05 (just over 22);
  • There were 236 injuries attended by the fire and rescue service in Wales, a reduction of 21 per cent compared to 2010-11, but part of a fluctuating series in a range of 236 to 310 injuries per year since 2006-07;
  • In 34 per cent of dwelling fires there was no fire detection equipment, a 4 percentage points reduction compared to 2010-11;
  • There were 3,024 malicious false alarm calls during the year: this has dropped by 6 per cent compared with 2010-11 and by 42 per cent since 2004-05.
