The latest National Statistics on social services for adults produced by the Local Government Data Unit and the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 25 September 2008 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority website Statistics on enquiries, assessments and social services for adults include data for Wales for the period up to the end of March 2008. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 19 September 2007.

Key points from the latest release are:

  • Local authorities received 167,000 enquiries about social services and assessed the needs of 87,500 people, an increase of 10% in the number of assessments over the previous year.
  • At 31st March 2008 there were 81,400 adults receiving social services. 66,500 people
    (82%) were receiving community based services and 14,900 (18%) were in care homes. 73% were aged 65 and over and 27% of service users were aged 18-64.
