The latest National Statistics on Community Dental Services in Wales produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 27 November 2008 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority website This release provides some background as to the role of the Community Dental Service (CDS). It draws together data collected from recent Community Dental Services (KC64) returns and dental epidemiological surveys. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 8 November 2007.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • The number of dentists employed by the Community Dental Service (CDS) in Wales is relatively few compared to the number of dentists in the General Dental Service accounting for around 1 in 11of all dentists in 2007-08.
  • During 2007-08, the Community Dental Service in Wales saw over 67,000 people (first contacts).
  • Children aged 5-15 accounted for over half of first contacts.
  • Over 20,000 children were screened by the CDS in Wales during 2007-08, representing 82 per cent of the total people screened.
