Births and Infant Mortality Statistics, 2007

Statistics on births and infant mortality include data for England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales for the period up to the end of December 2007. The latest release updates the bulletin previously released on 27 March 2008.

The key points from the latest bulletin are:

• There were 34,414 live births, continuing an upward trend since 2002.
• The total fertility rate was an average of 1.90 children per woman.
• 54 per cent of live births were outside marriage.
• There were 171 stillbirths.
• There were 182 deaths of infants under 1 year, equivalent to an infant mortality rate of 5.3 per thousand live births.
