The latest statistics on Delayed Transfers of Care produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 28 April 2009 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on Delayed Transfers of Care include data for Wales on the census date 18 March 2009. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 31 March 2009.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • The total number of patients experiencing a delayed transfer of care on the census date of 18 March 2009 was 438; this is an increase of 4, or 1 per cent, on the figure for 18 February 2009.
  • The total number of patients waiting to leave the NHS was 280.  Of these, 64 were delayed in mental health facilities and 216 were in other acute and community hospitals. A further 95 patients were experiencing a delayed transfer within the NHS or waiting for an assessment and for 63, the next stage could not be determined.
  • The median length of delay for patients waiting to leave the NHS was 34 days.
