The latest statistics on Delayed Transfers of Care produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 21 May 2009 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on Delayed Transfers of Care include data for Wales on the census date 15 April 2009. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 28 April 2009.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • The total number of patients experiencing a delayed transfer of care on the census date of 15 April 2009 was 467; this is an increase of 29, or 7 per cent, on the figure for 18 March 2009.
  • The total number of patients waiting to leave the NHS was 294.  Of these, 76 were delayed in mental health facilities and 218 were in other acute and community hospitals. A further 105 patients were experiencing a delayed transfer within the NHS or waiting for an assessment and for 68, the next stage could not be determined.
  • The median length of delay for patients waiting to leave the NHS was 34 days.
