The latest statistics on Delayed Transfers of Care produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 30 June 2009 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on Delayed Transfers of Care include data for Wales on the census date 20 May 2009. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 27 May 2009.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • The total number of patients experiencing a delayed transfer of care on the census date of 20 May 2009 was 431; this is a decrease of 36, or 8 per cent, on the figure for 15 April 2009.
  • The total number of patients waiting to leave the NHS was 281.  Of these, 76 were delayed in mental health facilities and 205 were in other acute and community hospitals. A further 85 patients were experiencing a delayed transfer within the NHS or waiting for an assessment and for 65, the next stage could not be determined.
  • The median length of delay for patients waiting to leave the NHS was 34 days.
