The latest National Statistics on GP prescribing produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 25 August 2009 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics on GP prescribing include data for the financial year 2008-09. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 19 August 2008.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • The number of prescription items dispensed increased from 62.0 million in 2007-08 to 64.9 million (up by 4.6 per cent). This was equivalent to 20.8 per head of population registered with a GP in Wales.
  • The net ingredient cost of all prescriptions dispensed decreased by 1.1 per cent over 2008-09, to £577.8 million. This was equivalent to £185.50 per person registered with a GP.
  • The average net ingredient cost per prescription item was £8.91; 51 pence lower than in 2007-08.
