Prescriptions by General Medical Practitioners, 2008-09

Statistics on GP prescribing include data for the financial year 2008-09. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 19 August 2008.

The key points from the latest release are:

• The number of prescription items dispensed increased from 62.0 million in 2007-08 to 64.9 million (up by 4.6 per cent). This was equivalent to 20.8 per head of population registered with a GP in Wales.
• The net ingredient cost of all prescriptions dispensed decreased by 1.1 per cent over 2008-09, to £577.8 million. This was equivalent to £185.50 per person registered with a GP.
• The average net ingredient cost per prescription item was £8.91; 51 pence lower than in 2007-08.
