Adoptions, Outcomes and Placements for Children Looked After by Local Authorities: Year Ending 31 March 2009

The latest National Statistics on Children Looked After, produced by the Local Government Data Unit and the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 26th August 2009 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on Children Looked After by Local Authorities include data for Wales for the period up to the end of March 2009. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 11th September 2008.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • There was a 1.5 per cent increase in the number of children looked after at 31st March 2009 (excluding short-term or respite care).
  • Approximately 10 per cent of children looked after at 31st March 2009 had three or more placements during the year.
  • Local authorities were in touch with 92 per cent of 19 year old care leavers; 49 per cent of these young people were in education, training or employment.
