The latest National Statistics on social services for adults produced by the Local Government Data Unit and the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 24 September 2009 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics on enquiries, assessments and social services for adults include data for Wales for the period up to the end of March 2009. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 25 September 2008.

Key points from the latest release are:

  • Local authorities assessed the needs of 90,700 people.
  • At 31st March 2009 there were 81,500 adults receiving social services. 67,400 people (83 per cent) were receiving community based services and 14,100 (17 per cent) were in care homes.
  • Almost three-quarters (73 per cent) of people receiving services were older people, aged 65 or over. Nine in ten users under 65 years old received community-based services compared to 72 per cent for those aged 85 or over. Half of the people using care homes were aged 85 or over.
