The latest National Statistics on social services staff produced by the Local Government Data Unit~Wales and the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 14 October 2009 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website The statistics include numbers of staff employed by local authorities in Wales at 31 March 2009. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 15 October 2008.

Key points from the latest release are:

  • 27,300 staff works in social services departments, comprising 15,800 (58 per cent) part-time staff and 11,500 (42 per cent) full-time staff.
  • The whole-time equivalent (w.t.e) number of staff employed was 20,173, a decrease of 68 staff compared to 12 months previously.
  • The percentage of staff that hold a required or recommended qualification increased from 53 per cent at 31 March 2008 to 56 per cent at 31 March 2009.
  • 16 per cent of all staff employed directly within local authority social services were able to conduct their business in Welsh.
