The latest statistics on Delayed Transfers of Care produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 27 October 2009 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on Delayed Transfers of Care include data for Wales on the census date 16 September 2009. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 29 September 2009.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • The total number of patients experiencing a delayed transfer of care on the census date of 16 September 2009 was 495; this is an increase of 60, or 13.8 per cent, on the figure for 19 August 2009.
  • The total number of patients waiting to leave the NHS was 310. Of these, 76 were delayed in mental health facilities and 234 were in other acute and community hospitals. A further 110 patients were experiencing a delayed transfer within the NHS or waiting for an assessment and for 75, the next stage could not be determined.
  • The median length of delay for patients waiting to leave the NHS was 34 days.
