The latest National Statistics on Community Dental Services in Wales produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 25 November 2009 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

This release presents a summary of the activity of the Community Dental Service (CDS) in Wales during 2008-09. Activity is summarised in terms of contacts patients make with the service, the types of treatments provided and additional services offered. A contact is defined as a patient visit, and occurs each time a patient is seen face-to-face by a member of the CDS for the purpose of examination, treatment, prevention of oral disease (including advice).

In an attempt to improve the quantity and quality of the annual data collection and to reduce the respondent burden the data collection questionnaire was redesigned in consultation with the CDS. As this is the first data collection using the new questionnaire this release has been labelled an experimental statistic. This reflects that this is a new official statistic release undergoing evaluation. This release is published in order to involve users and stakeholders in its development and as a means to build in quality at an early stage.

The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 27 November 2008.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • There were 180,156 contacts.
  • 19,631 primary school children were screened.
  • 861 secondary school children were screened.
