The latest National Statistics on General Pharmaceutical Services produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 26 November 2009 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics include the number of pharmacies, prescriptions dispensed and pharmaceutical services offered in Wales for the period up to the end of March 2009. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 25 November 2008.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • In 2008-09, there were 706 community pharmacies in Wales. They dispensed 60.5 million prescription items over the course of the year.
  • Community pharmacies can be commissioned to deliver enhanced services. The most frequently commissioned service was supervised administration, followed by medication review. These services were provided by 414 and 284 community pharmacies respectively.
  • Almost 90,000 medicine use reviews were provided by accredited pharmacies in Wales during 2008-09, an increase of 29,000 (47.9%) on last year.
  • In 2008-09, 29 out of the 59 applications decided were granted to open a new community pharmacy in Wales.
  • During 2008-09, 47 applications were decided on appeal, of which 34 were dismissed.
