Delayed Transfers of Care, October 2009

Statistics on Delayed Transfers of Care include data for Wales on the census date 21 October 2009. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 27 October 2009.

The key points from the latest release are:

• The total number of patients experiencing a delayed transfer of care on the census date of 21 October 2009 was 553; this is an increase of 58, or 11.7 per cent, on the figure for 16 September 2009.
• The total number of patients waiting to leave the NHS was 470.  Of these, 90 were delayed in mental health facilities and 380 were in other acute and community hospitals. A further 39 patients were experiencing a delayed transfer within the NHS or waiting for an assessment and for 44, the next stage could not be determined.
• The median length of delay for patients waiting to leave the NHS was 34 days.
