The latest statistics on Delayed Transfers of Care produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 23 February 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

Statistics on Delayed Transfers of Care include data for Wales on the census date 20 January 2010. The latest release updates the statistics previously released on 26 January 2010.

The key points from the latest release are:

  • The total number of patients experiencing a delayed transfer of care on the census date of 20 January 2010 was 521; this is an increase of 8, or 1.6 per cent, on the figure for 16 December 2009.
  • The total number of patients waiting to leave the NHS was 415.  Of these, 85 were delayed in mental health facilities and 330 were in other acute and community hospitals. A further 62 patients were experiencing a delayed transfer within the NHS or waiting for an assessment and for 44 the next stage could not be determined.
  • The median length of delay for patients waiting to leave the NHS was 29 days.
