The latest National Statistics on births and infant mortality produced by the Welsh Assembly Government were released on 30th March 2010 according to the arrangements approved by the UK Statistics Authority.

UK Statistics Authority Website Statistics on births and infant mortality include data for England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales for the period up to the end of December 2008. The latest release updates the bulletin previously released on 26 March 2009.

The key points from the latest bulletin are:

  • There were 35,560 live births, continuing an upward trend since 2002.
  • The total fertility rate was an average of 1.96 children per woman.
  • 56 per cent of live births were outside marriage.
  • There were 165 stillbirths.
  • There were 147 deaths of infants under 1 year, equivalent to an infant mortality rate of 4.1 per thousand live births.
